A U.S. Model 1852 Naval Officers Sword by W. H. Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia. 36” overall, 31” slightly curved, etched blade with stars, trophies of arms, scrollwork, anchor and shield, the obverse with oak leaves, vines, riband with ‘USN’, fouled anchor & eagle surmounting cannon & ‘W. H. Horstmann & Company Philadelphia’ & Proof slug on the forte. Owners name in tablet ‘Ralph R. Slogsdall Jr’. Gilt brass hilt with acanthus decoration & “USN” on the guard,
scrolled sea serpent head quillon, knuckle bow with sea serpent finial connected to the
pommel, which depicts acanthus & a US eagle surrounded by 13 stars. White fish skin grips with twisted brass wire. Leather scabbard with brass mounts.
