A Rare Troopers Sword of The Earl Of Oxford's Regiment Of Horse, Later The Royal Horseguards (The Blues).

33 ½” overall, 27” single edged blade double edged towards the reduced point & with a narrow fuller along the back on each side, the forte incised with a running wolf mark on one side. Brass hilt comprising double shell guard cast in relief on each side with the crowned crest &motto of Aubrey de Vere, 20th Earl of Oxford, linked to the knuckle guard by a scrolled bar on each side, short rear quillon, large globular pommel en suite with the shell guard, original wooden grip bound with twisted wire of varying degrees of thickness.

Rare sword in quite good condition, blade 3” short from old sharpening.
Lt. General Aubrey de Vere, 20th Earl of Oxford KG was appointed Colonel of the regiment on 26 January 1661 until 4 February 1668. In December 1668 he was reappointed Colonel until his death in 1703. He was described as 'a man of loose morals but of inoffensive temper and of courtly manners'.
