48” overall, 29 5/8” .58 calibre three groove rifled round barrel with blade fore sight, bayonet lug, folding rear sight for 300 and 500 yards. Lift up Allin Trap Door breech with a rack & pinion, spring loaded extractor, ejector assembly. Flat lock plate dated 1863 on the tail, the Springfield Armory eagle motif & ‘U.S. SPRINGFIELD’ marked ahead of the hammer. Nearly full length walnut stock secured by two spring retained barrel bands & fitted with steel forend cap & standard ‘U.S.’ butt plate. Iron trigger guard & two sling swivels. Faint oval cartouche {ESA] Allin near lock screw. Iron cup headed ramrod.

Altered from an 1861 Springfield rifled musket, the first trap door Springfield rifle. This example was possibly shortened for cadet use.
In good condition, lock case hardened, other metal parts patinated bright finish, bore mint, small hole in bottom of fore end where the ramrod rubs.
