A Fine English Civil War Officers Mortuary Hilted Back Sword.

40” overall, 34” broad single edged tapering blade cut with three long deep fullers, stamped within the fullers with bladesmith’s marks and ‘H H H MEFECIT SOLINGEN H H H’ on both sides. The hilt with a broad saucer shaped guard plate with three main guard bars fixed to the fig shaped pommel. The guard plate is pierced with scrolls and four masks and covered with chiselled decoration.  The guard bars and pommel with chiselled lines in a fern pattern. A curled wrist guard at rear of the plate. With original twisted brass wire grip including two Turk’s heads.

Circa 1640.

A very fine sword in good condition, blade engraving worn.
