A Fine 1891 Pattern Naval Dirk. 23 ½” overall, 17” single edged blade deeply etched with crown over fouled anchor, Royal cipher and ‘Gieve Matthews and Seagrove Ltd ’ in a tablet on forte. Regulation hilt with lion’s head pommel & sword knot, fish skin grip. In its original brass mounted leather scabbard with owner’s initials ‘VEMM’.
In very fine condition, virtually all original polish.
Vivian Edward Marshall May commissioned 1 June1939 and served as a Paymaster Lieutenant in HMS Southampton, HMS Edinburgh, HMS Pembroke and HMS Saker (stone frigate Washinton DC) after the war he appears to have settled and married in the USA, further research may be rewarding.
