A Very Rare Four Barrel Flintlock Tap Action Volley Pistol by Twigg.

8 ½” overall, 3” round 80 bore barrels numbered 1, 2, 3 & 4 with London proofs, box lock action, both sides of frame are engraved with trophies of flags and "TWIGG London" on the left side . Two position tap on the left hand side firing the top two barrels together and then the lower pair. Ring necked cock with sliding safety which also locks the pan cover. Engraved trigger guard . Figured slab sided butt with white metal shield-shaped escutcheon engraved with the owner's initials ‘J.H’.

A fine and rare pistol in good condition, I have never seen this type of 2 battery volley pistol  before.

John Fox Twigg was born at Grantham, Lincolnshire, in 1732 and apprenticed Edward Newton of Grantham (active 1718-1764), By 1755, Twigg working as a gunmaker from Angel Ct., Charing Cross until 1760 when he moved to 132 Strand, opposite Catherine St and continued at this address until 1776. He moved again in 1776, this time to Piccadilly where he remained until his death in 1790.
