A Fine Cased Pair of Flintlock Rifled Officer’s Pistols by R. Fenton. 10” overall, 5 ¼” sighted 16 bore 10 groove rifled octagonal barrels engraved ‘R.FENTON LONDON’ along the top flats and inlet with single platinum line. Finely engraved tangs incorporating standing rear-sights, both Barrels numbered 3B299, on under side London Proofs. Stepped, bolted, bevelled locks finely engraved with scrolling foliage and signed ‘R, Fenton’, semi waterproof pans, roller on frizzen springs fitted with sliding safety, French cocks decorated en-suite. Full stocked in walnut, cut with chequering at the grips, both guns numbered ‘3B’ on left hand wrist. Iron mounts, square backed trigger guard with pineapple finials and ramrod pipe, horn tipped ramrods one with worm. In their contemporary, possibly original, oak case, lined with claret Shutford plush with accessories including coffin shaped powder flask, bullet mould, oil bottle, cleaning rod and jag, the exterior fitted with flush carrying handle.

Shutford plush is a high quality hard wearing fabric made in the Village of Shutford Oxfordshire most often used for carriage seats, upholstery and livery uniforms.
Richard Fenton is recorded at 19 Shoemaker Row, Blackfriars from 1792 to 1815. In 1808 he devised improved rifle sights incorporating a platinum strip. He was a member of the Duke of Cumberland Sharpshooters.
