8817 . A Very Rare Flintlock Muff Pistol by Mortimer. 5 1/8” overall, 1 3/8” round two stage canon barrel in 120 bore, with Tower private proofs. Barrel and box lock action made of Tutenag. Engraved action decorated with border ornament and scrolls carried by rococo foliage, the scrolls respectively signed 'Mortimer' and inscribed 'London', engraved tang. Highly figured rounded walnut butt profusely inlaid with silver wire scrolling tendrils, flowers and rococo shells within a wrigglework frame.  Silver mounts comprising grotesque mask butt cap and escutcheon engraved with the owner's initials 'JH', tutenag trigger guard engraved with a diamond shaped panel on the bow.

Hallmarked 1776.

A very early Mortimer pistol of the best quality made before he signed as H. W. Mortimer. In very fine condition, small crack to cock.
