
An American Model 1840 Dragoon Heavy Cavalry Sabre. 41” overall, 35” slightly curved blade with single wide fuller, marked ‘N. P. Ames Cabotville 1848’ & ‘US’ over ‘WD’ on the ricasso. The brass three bar hilt with domed pommel stamped ‘673’ & ‘WD’ & inspectors stamp J.W.R (James Wolfe Ripley 1856-1855). Wooden brown leather covered grip with 17 turns of twisted brass wire. In its original iron scabbard with two rings & large drag.
Dated 1848.
In very good condition. Blade with much original polish.
This model sword was used extensively from the 1840s through the Civil War
