14 ½" overall, 7" octagonal sighted .36 calibre barrel rifled with five grooves, under lever loading rod. Top flats of frame engraved 'Savage RFA Co Middletown CT. H.S.North patented June 17, 1856. January 18. 1859. May 15. 1860'. Six shot cylinder, offset hammer, showing the notched rearsight, double trigger mechanism enclosed in large trigger guard, walnut two piece grips. With Government inspector’s marks and 4290

Good condition, crisp action

Only some 23,000 + of these revolvers were made in the early Civil War years and the apparent sale and issue of them is recorded as: The Government purchased 12,000 Savage Navy revolvers. The remaining 10,000 + revolvers were purchased and shipped to the Confederacy and were issued to the: 34th Battalion of Virginia Cavalry (Witcher's Nighthawks) . 35th Battalion of Virginia Cavalry (White's Rebels) . 11th Texas Cavalry . 7th Virginia Cavalry (Ashby's Cavalry) . 7th Missouri Cavalry.
