41” overall, 34” straight blade with broad fuller and spear point, engraved with VR cipher and scrolling foliage, owner’s name ‘H A. Lafone’ in a scroll and ‘Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London’ and numbered 27119 on the spine. Also on the spine ‘VESTIGIA NULLA RETRORSU’ which translates as ‘We Do Not Retreat’, motto of 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. Pierced honeysuckle hilt, chequered pommel, black fish skin grip with twisted silver wire. In its steel scabbard with 2 suspension rings..

Sword in good condition, edge with some nicks from use.
Sword of Herbert Arthur Lafone. First commissioned in 5th Dragoon Guards (sword bears the regimental motto) but served only 18 months with them. Thereafter 3rd Dragoon Guards until his death at the age of 32 whilst on home service. Worthy of further research
