A Rare 1827 Naval Royal Dockyard Battalion Sword.

37” overall, 30 ½” slightly curved fullered blade of Wilkinson’s new pattern, engraved with crowned fouled anchor, foliage and acorns, and ‘Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London’ to one side, the other with foliage and royal coat of arms and proof mark to forte. Solid gilt half basket hilt with crowned fouled anchor, folding side guard lions head pommel, the backstrap with full length lion’s mane. Black fish skin grip with twisted gilt wire. In its original gilt brass and black leather scabbard, top mount with rings for vertical suspension. ‘Wilkinson Gun & Sword Maker Pall Mall London’ in a shield on the locket.

A rare sword, an early example of Wilkinson’s pattern blade, blade darkly patinated, scabbard with old taped repair.

This style of blade introduced in 1846 and then in 1847 the vertical scabbard rings were introduced. Royal Dockyard Battalion’s formed in 1847 from Dockyard staff and disbanded in about 1857.
