A Very Fine Rare Medieval Falchion, 33 ½” overall, 26 ½” fullered blade broadening to the clipped back strongly reinforced tip, tapering downturned cross guard, the circular pommel drawn out to a flattened peak, flattened pyramid form tang button, original wooden grip. Both the pommel and cross guard show good traces of silver false damascene.
Circa 1350-1400.
In very fine condition, darkly patinated blade, very rare to find swords of this period in unexcavated condition with original wooden grips. Sold with some copies of X-rays and sectional drawings and observations by Dr David Williams of the Wallace Collection.
This type is shown in various contemporary illuminated manuscripts in combat between knights or men-at-arms on foot. Similar examples are held in the Musée de l'Armée in Paris and the Netherlands Army Museum in Delft.
