A Rare Pattern 1857 Engineer Officer's Sword. 38” overall, 32 ½” slightly curved  blade etched with a crowned strung bugle device and ‘37th Middlesex Rifles’ the reverse withn’1st Middlesex Engineers’ and a panel with initials ‘E.J.G.’ The forte with F Smith & Co Strand London,. Gilt brass hilt of the Royal Engineers 1857 pattern shagreen grip with twist wire binding, in its original brass Field Officers of Engineers scabbard engraved E.J.G in a panel. In its original leather bag with an Engineer officer’s leather & bullion belt with VR belt buckle.

Very interesting sword with very well etched blade in very good condition.

Carried by Captain William J Gardiner Middlesex Rifle Volunteers and later re-engraved and re-hilted for Captain Edward J Gardiner 1st Middlesex Engineer Volunteers, sold with a little research .
