A Fine Flintlock Overcoat Pistol by Durs Egg.

9 ¾” overall, 5 1/8”  octagonal sighted 44 bore barrels with silver blade foresight, engraved ‘D. Egg London’ in script on the top flat. Band of engraved fletching at the breech, false breech with band of engraving, ‘V’ rear sight, tang with border line & trophy of arms engraving. Platinum touch hole. Flat bolted bevelled border engraved lock, narrow safety catch, engraved ‘D Egg’ in script beneath the semi water proof pan, starburst engraved behind the pan, trophy of arms  engraved beneath the safety catch & the tip of the tail, safety locking frizzen pan. Double border line & foliate engraved swan neck cock, engraved cock retaining screw, double border line engraved back of frizzen with central spine decoration, the tip curved slightly forwards, frizzen spring with roller. Numbered 359 on inside of lockplate.  Figured walnut full stock, rounded butt chequered with small diamond pattern, oval silver escutcheon with initials ‘T.W.A’ surrounded by a belt engraved ’Nil Desperandun’ (Never Despairing) surmounted by an Earl’s Coronet.  Steel mounts comprising trigger guard with decorated edging with flowers & a Union Jack shield design on the bow, trigger plate with pineapple finial, plain trigger guard tang, collared ramrod pipe, single barrel bolt, engraved side nail and side nail cup. Original horn tipped ramrod.

He served under Lord Grey and  Lord Melbourne  as Master of Buckhounds  between 1830 and 1834 and under Melbourne Postmaster General between 1835 and 1841.

Durs Egg Son of Leonz Egg, gunmaker, Switzerland. Born 1748, baptised Urs Christian. After a short stay in Paris came to London and worked for John Twigg 1772. Granted denization in 1791. Gunmaker & Sword Cutler. Became gunmaker to George IV & Duke of York.
