A Very Fine Cased Pair of Flintlock Travelling Pistols by J. Thompson. 10 ¾" overall, 6" heavy octagonal barrels of 52 bore with foresights, engraved on top flats 'Princes St Edinburgh'. Engraved tangs & false breeches with raised rearsights, small stepped lightly engraved bolted locks, plates engraved 'J Thompson'. Small lightly engraved chamfered swan necked cocks, waterproof pans & rollers on frizzen springs. Walnut full stocks with chequered butts & horn fore-ends. Small white metal oval escutcheons, iron trigger guards engraved on the bows with trophies of arms & pineapple finials. Brass tipped wooden ramrods, one with brass cap covered screw retained in 2 pipes. In their original green baize lined mahogany case with accessories:- virtually mint bottle shaped flask, bullet mould stamped '52', turnscrew, wad punch & cleaning jag. The lid of the case with inset ring handle engraved 'Thos Ogilvy Fotheringham Esq' & a central escutcheon with his coat of arms.

Fine condition, some original finish to barrel and lock, more finish on trigger guards and ramrod pipes, minor tiny scratches to stocks.

Offered with a handwritten note signed by W. Keith Neal, dated 13/1/62 and reading: 'Thomas Ogilvy Fotheringham - Colonel Scots Fusilier Guards eldest son of Alexander Ogilvy Fotheringham also Colonel of Scots Fusilier Guards - Thomas Ogilvy Fotheringham died unmarried in 1830 - There was a Thomas Fotheringham of Powrie in 1412.'

A John Thompson is recorded of 14 Princes Street, Edinburgh between 1823 and 1827

Col Thomas Ogilvy Fotheringham.  Served at the Battle of Copenhagen and in the Peninsular and was wounded at the Battle of Talavera.
